Urban Project > Urban Orchard-gardens English | Español
The conservation of areas of huerta in the interior of the cities, transformed into urban orchard-gardens, has entailed working in close cooperation with the organizations that have historically performed this function. To this end an agreement has been signed with the Acequia de Favara irrigation association, whose water channels crisscross the sector, for the conception, development and subsequent management of the largest urban orchard-gardens in any major Spanish city. Urban orchard-gardens are qualified as green zones, located within the city boundary, whose vegetation is agricultural, used and maintained by the citizens themselves, and accessible to all of the local population by means of roads and paths. This means it is the local people, cultivating small orchard-garden units (from 25 to 100 m2) to produce fruit and vegetables for their own consumption, and creating for this purpose associations and groups that together to conserve the public space and the landscape, who directly foment urban cohesion and social interaction.
The participation of the Acequia de Favara irrigation association in the project ensures the future of these zones, while the fact that they will be watered from the Acequia makes them subject to the Water Tribunal, thereby extending or developing its competency to a new form of cultivation, and injecting new life into it. The sector will have some seven kilometres of conserved, repaired or renewed water channels, while will be integrated into the design of the central park, and by guaranteeing the safety of the pedestrians will enable the culture of water to impregnate the design of the entire public space. |
